Head of Legal

Taking a key role in reviewing, improving and developing the legal framework for the business you will work closely with the leadership team and provide day to day support to our Commercial and Data Protection teams. You will be liaising with legal teams in Government Departments FTSE 100 businesses and global data providers. The role will require skills in negotiating terms, drafting agreements, satisfying compliance requirements and ensuring we meet the high standards of our many policies.

Main Responsibilities of the Position

  • Negotiating, reviewing, drafting and advising on a range of commercial contracts for the procurement, engineering, sales and marketing teams:
  • Sales and marketing partnership and agency contracts
  • Goods and services supply contracts
  • IT systems and services contracts, including software, SaaS, Cloud services, development
  • outsourcing and new technology solutions
  • B2B and possibly B2C contracts
  • NDAs
  • Strategic purchasing agreements
  • Product development/data integration agreements
  • Assisting with the development of a culture of contracting excellence through proactive engagement with key stakeholders and to help drive continuous improvement of contracting process, quality and turnaround times.
  • Providing contract negotiation/red flag training and support to commercial teams, and new starters/others, as required.
  • Work closely with the business supporting bids and tenders for provision of our services in a wide range of sectors, including:
    – Reviewing tender documents, raising clarification questions, and ensuring compliance with bid timetable and instructions.
    – Assessing and advising on the risk profile of new contracts
    – Working with multiple business stakeholders to obtain relevant input to the bidding process and ensure a clear understanding of bid and contract requirements.
    – Assisting with both contract and data compliance provisions.
  • Providing ad-hoc legal advice, supported by our legally qualified CCO, on a wide range of issues, including:
    – Consumer law questions
    – Data protection matters
  • Confidentiality issues
  • Employment contracts
  • Provide support to the CCO in:
    – Reporting / tracking significant legal matters
    – Ensuring compliance with delegated authorities and protocols.
    – Managing the relationships with our legal panel of external solicitors.
  • Work to improve business standards and reduce risk, including by:
    – Drafting and assisting in the implementation of new policies and procedures
    – Providing legal updates and training to the business.



  • England and Wales qualified solicitor ideally with 5+ years’ PQE



  • Substantive post qualification experience drafting, negotiating and advising on a wide range of commercial contracts, ideally in the technology sector.
  • Experience and strong knowledge of commercial and IT contracts including software arrangements, for ex. SaaS, Cloud, revenue models and new technologies is also essential.
  • Trained with a well regarded private practice or in-house
  • Experience with procurement law including competitive tender processes conducted pursuant to public procurement regulations and/or anti-trust matters.
  • High attention to detail, sharp legal analytical and pragmatic problem-solving skills.
  • Real commercial awareness of the context in which legal advice/assistance is given/received.
  • Ability to build relationships with key stakeholders; influencing in a confident and professional manner
  • A personable individual who can work well with third parties and other professionals
  • Advanced written and oral communication skills
  • Able to work autonomously
  • Tight organisational and time-management skills
  • Happy to travel on occasion where needed


  • A knowledge of Intellectual Property law would be advantageous, as would experience in data contracts
  • Legal experience in the software sector is desired, but not required
  • Some knowledge of competition law is desired, but not required.
